Big Banyan Wines

Some 25 km southwest of Bangalore is the town of Ramnagaram, where Big Banyan Wines has established a 10ha vineyard.  Somewhat surprisingly, they have chosen to establish their modern winery in Goa, meaning that their own grapes have to travel over 500km to the northwest before being vinified.  And in case you're wondering how they managed to launch their wines in 2007 before their Ramnagaram vineyards were ready, there's a simple explanation.  They bought grapes from farmers in Nashik and shipped them some 600km south to Goa.

Many grapes travel long distances in refrigerated trucks through Australia before reaching a winery, but this is an inefficient and risky business.  It may be suitable for creating bulk wine brands, but it's no way to make quality wine.
